The initial step in diagnosing varicose veins is the examination by a vascular surgeon, based on the patient’s current complaints and the observation of varicose formations. Following this stage, a color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS) is performed on the patient to gain insights into the underlying causes and the extent of the disease.
Doppler ultrasound is the most commonly used method for diagnosis. It is practical, easy to perform, and cost-effective. There are also other methods used for more serious and specific cases, with one of the most important being venography, also known as venous angiography.
CT and MRI are not commonly used in routine practice. Their use may be prioritized in very specific situations, for instance, if there is a suspected mass causing pressure on veins within the abdomen.
How is Doppler Ultrasound performed?
While the patient is lying down, the diameter, structure, and the presence and degree of venous insufficiency of the veins are measured. Additionally, maneuvers such as straining or coughing, which increase intra-abdominal pressure, are used to better evaluate venous insufficiency. The same procedures are repeated with the patient standing. The findings are documented in a report, providing crucial data for determining the patient’s treatment. The entire process for both legs typically takes place within 30-60 minutes.
We also utilize Doppler ultrasound to visualize deep veins for treatment purposes. It is crucial for this procedure to be performed by experienced hands to avoid misguiding the treatment.
Can pregnant women undergo Doppler ultrasound?
As Doppler ultrasound is a method that utilizes sound waves, it does not expose the patient to radiation. Pregnant women can undergo Doppler ultrasound at any stage of their pregnancy without causing harm to the baby.
What is the cost of Doppler ultrasound?
The cost varies between 400-800 TL for both legs. Our clinic does not charge for preliminary Doppler assessments and examinations. If advanced Doppler examinations are required, our affiliated radiology center offers a 50% discount to our patients.
How is venography performed?
When we want to get a more detailed examination of the vascular structure and veins inside the abdomen, we perform venography, a more advanced procedure than Doppler ultrasound. During this procedure, we can also perform interventions such as catheterization, filter placement, and stent placement in the patient’s vascular system. Venography involves injecting a contrast agent (a substance visible on X-ray films) into the veins, and it is performed based on the principle of capturing instantaneous images. As it involves radiation, it is not suitable for use in pregnant women.
